German-Iranian economic relations - more than just business

A statement of the German-Iranian Chamber of Commerce Hamburg e.V. :

For months, in various media and by political groups, attempts are made to reduce the European-Iranian economic ties with the aim to disrupt business relations or discredit companies and organizations that maintain and promote the centuries-long ties between the two countries.
We strongly oppose such attempts and call for an objective and non-ideological assessment of relations between Iran, Germany and Europe. According to the Articles of Association of our chamber we act politically, ideologically and culturally neutral and independent of government influence by the Islamic Republic of Iran or the Federal Republic of Germany.
We call on all companies to comply with the existing sanctions legislation against Iran closely, but criticize those sanctions in the ongoing debate wherever they are unclear or inconsistent in themselves or where the administrative burden for the companies concerned is unacceptable.
We see the differences at the nuclear issue as a political issue that can only be resolved politically. We believe it is neither reasonable nor suitable, to use the economic relations between European countries and Iran as a political weapon. The products and services which are exchanged between European and Iran companies are legally in accordance with the existing systems of sanctions and, neither militarily nor atomic usable.
We regret that many European banks withdraw due to politically motivated pressure from financing Iran business, while they earned for decades high profits in this country. We encourage a close examination of all the goods to be exported to Iran, but demand that this is done competently and quickly. The approval authorities, customs and all other authorities should have enough qualified staff to fulfill their duties.
We oppose any attempt to discredit legitimate commercial transactions with politically motivated campaigns by outsiders who try to scandalize virtually every economic and cultural relation with Iran, as long as it fits into their own disordered view of the reality.

The European-Iranian economic relations have grown for centuries; they are in many cases not only for business but also friendly relations between people of both countries. They offer beside business chances numerous opportunities to learn from and about each.

We believe this, especially in times that are marked by political crises is important and motivates us to remain committed to these relations.
